The North Borders

So many good albums have been released in the last month including Charles Bradley, Night Moves, Mop Mop and Bonobo as the year starts to hit it's stride for superb albums.

So starting off then with Bonobo who on North Borders, his follow up the masterful Black Sands, is a further excursion into cinematic dance music, drawing upon dubstep, the oriental and his own textural approach to electronica.

Track 1 'First Fires' might be more reminiscent of SBTRKT who themselves were probably influenced by Simon Green's thematic, addictive sound. Guests on the album include the ever excellent Eykah Badu on Heaven For The Sinner, a two step glitch and a yearning melody and vocalist Grey Reverend (Cinematic Orchestra). Then there's the clockwork of Cirrus, whilst Emkay sways towards Mj Cole (no bad thing) amongst the 12 tracks here. An artist at the peak of his powers right now and a worthy follow up to Black Sands.

Khemistry

Whilst on a trawl in search of rare groove gems I stumbled across this great tune from 1982. Trading for £35 a copy, this is a really good example of early 80's boogie. It sounds a little like a Greg Carmichael production, but actually produced by hot shot producers Mainline.

Strictly Reserved For You

A soul funk flag bearer for Daptone, Charles Bradley today previewed a track from his forthcoming album 'Victim Of Love'. With his trademark gravelly vocals that would have James Brown raising an eyebrow and perhaps a cursory nod of approval, Strictly Reserved For You represents a less politised track from Bradley whose new album is telling stories on relationship. As ever his sound is deeply rooted to a 70's sound and is suitably weather beaten with female harmonies in all the right places.

Needless to say but this track is making me excited for the album in Spring!

Lonnie Liston Smith & Spotify

Recently the rather , er ace, Ace Records decided the time was right for them to have their catalogue up on Spotify.

One of the gems amongst the many they have is this space jazz album from 'Expansions' Lonnie Liston Smith. Starting off with this seminal track, this groove album is not to be missed. I've added it to my 'music for 2013 playlist which will mostly be new albums and singles but will contain some older discoveries and re-discoveries from this year as well.

In other news there's a new album from Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, their first since 2005 (single track now added to the playlist), Bonobo who premiered his track 'Cirrus' this week and Charles Bradley via Daptone all coming up in the first few months of the year!

Please check this out and subscribe :)

Playlist: Supa Soulful

Another of the playlists that i've been working on for a few months as i've been collecting some decent RnB from the archives and some newer tunes too.

I've been quite enjoying some of the sparse but soulful crunk recently from artists like Cymphonique, Lulu James and Aluna George and decided to bridge that against some classics and lesser known gems too..

As Aluna George says 'You Know You Like It' !
