Right Thing: Rosie Lowe
Music editors and industry shakers are currently compiling and indeed sweating over their Hot for 2014 lists including the much vaunted BBC 'sound of [insert year here]' poll. Whilst these lists tend to contain a bias of heavily funded major label artists, one artist getting my personal vote right now is Devonshire raised Rosie Lowe.
Produced by Kwes (Warp) and Dave Okumu of The Invisible (Ninja Tune), her debut EP presents some highly addictive moody, minimal RnB with some fairly straight up lyrics telling things as they appear. The EP includes this frankly stunning promotional video for Right Thing, which contains enough mystique to make us want to know and hear more.
Fans of Banks, Maya Jane Coles and Jessie Ware will enjoy this debut from the South Londoner, out Dec 2nd.

New Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu & Kelis
Two new tunes announced on the same day from some heavyweight RnB artistes today included the collaboration between sharp suited songstress Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu titled 'Q.u.e.e.n' , taken from new album Electric Lady (dropping in time for Festival season). A decent promo for the new album and the Monae rap at the end of this 5 minute record is worth waiting for.
And just hours later a new, less sassy; more soulful Kelis announced her return with 'Jerk Ribs'. First thoughts are the melody's a bit hard to get to grips with and it lacks the punch of some of the records from her Tasty album, but early days all the same and nice to have Kelis back.

Strictly Reserved For You
A soul funk flag bearer for Daptone, Charles Bradley today previewed a track from his forthcoming album 'Victim Of Love'. With his trademark gravelly vocals that would have James Brown raising an eyebrow and perhaps a cursory nod of approval, Strictly Reserved For You represents a less politised track from Bradley whose new album is telling stories on relationship. As ever his sound is deeply rooted to a 70's sound and is suitably weather beaten with female harmonies in all the right places.
Needless to say but this track is making me excited for the album in Spring!

Inside My Love- The Decoders
I stumbled upon this cover of Minnie Riperton's classic 'Inside My Love' and felt moved by the spirit to share this with you.
Wax Poetics backed Los Angeles band The Decoders have been lovingly re-interpreting a few Rotary Connection songs recently including I Am The Black Gold of The Sun and Les Fleurs.
It's not that it veers wildly away from the original, it's more the fact that it sticks to it closely but the groove is more reggae than soul and the introduction of a fantastic breakdown at 3.08 onwards sets it apart.
Music has the power to inspire, lift the soul and make us thankful of the work God gives our hands to do so this thanksgiving i'm thankful for many things but music is one of them and this cover is so so good.

Early New York Subway Graffiti 1973-1975
Whilst in Bristol over Christmas I popped into Rise, an independent record shop near Park Street in the hope of spending a bit of Christmas money and unearthing a few gems.
Through their tweet feed i'd read of a book recently published by photographer Keith Baugh, documenting in photo's graffiti on trains from the Harlem, South Bronx, Times Square and Coney Island in New York. I was working in London when he did a signing at the Bristol store, but I managed to pick up a copy before I headed back and it proved to be a completely compelling read.
As well as having many photo's of trains covered in tags, graffito and designs, Baugh also includes some other shots at the time and a few pictures of those involved at the time as they are now. The book comes with extensive sleevenotes on the background to his work and those involved at the time. A very colourful book, useful for both coffee table and to see some of the early pioneers at work, would highly recommend getting hold of a copy!

Rewards With Repeated Listen : Raphael Saadiq- Good Man
Retro RnB/Soul artist Raphael Saadiq can really hit the spot with some of his music, and yet other times he seems like he's trying to be cool just a bit too much.
Take for instance the masterful 'Skyy Can You Feel Me' from critically acclaimed album 'Instant Vintage' or the edgy 'Rifle Love' then juxtapose with records like Sure Hope You Mean It which have such a close an affiliation to Motown that you wonder if it was in fact part of the legendary Detroit label's output.
On this first single from album number 4, he's definitely grasped an opportunity to blend both vintage soul with a modern twist. On Good Man he makes a statement about trying to do the right thing to support his family including working two jobs putting food on the table and loving the Lord.
Here too he has carefully crafted a very decent piece of cinema (directed by Isaiah Seret (Gogol Bordello’s “Immigraniada”) which pauses mid-way for a piece of controversial female fight-club footage whereafter his 'Lady' frames him for a crime he didn't commit and in the process he is humiliated. All because he can provide love but not an abundance of money. However the song doesn't end there and we see the moral to the story come the end.
In a similar vein to Aloe Blaccs I Need A Dollar (see previous album review on this blog), he uses the sample-soul sound to his advantage, overlaying thoughtful lyrics to a sassy RnB-come-neo soul hook written and performed by Taura Stinson (Destiny's Child). If Saadiq wasn't on this record now, then Marvin Gaye wouldn've been. Times are lean and people are more likely to be working two jobs, something Saadiq grapples with on this timely song.
Well worth spinning; this should be considered a modern soul classic. *****
